Automating archival collections using MARC-AMC and Z39.50 at the University of Liverpool : a case study

Abstract

Summarizes the work in progress in the department of Special Collections and Archives at The University of Liverpool, UK on the production of automated catalogues for 4 archival collections consisting of 100.000 pieces in total. Discusses the decision to use the MARC-AMC format which, although designed for the listing of archives at a collection level, can also fulful the requirements for the production of finding aids at item or piece level. For inputting data, ProCite, an inexpensive database running on a Windows environment, was chosen. The searchable cataloguing records produced can be transferred to the Library's integrated system, to the CURL database, and to the Internet. The ability to export data to a Z39.50 server and (in future) to the EAD (Encoded Archival Description) format ensures that access will never be reliant on particular hardware or software configurations
