Abstract

Since the early 1990s, a new class of visual access tools (Visual Information Retrieval Interfaces) has been developed which use proximity as a spatial cue to user regarding the relationships among items in a collection. Discusses the theory underlying these tools, introduces a specific WWW application using the technology (InterFind), and indicates the potential of the tool for visual access to images as well as text documents. Suggests that applications incorporating this technology should be introduced to users presently, since widespread commercial introduction of products incorporating these techniques is likely to occur within the next 5 years
