Abstract

Explores various aspects of the relationship between reading and thinking. Outlines changes to the ways people have experienced the written word through the centuries and explores how the modifications in our way of reading as a result of the information explosion are impinging on our mental life. Identifies a displacement of the vertical or in-depth by the horizontal or lateral change, a shift from intensive to extensive reading. The ability to see through a multitude of facts to underlying laws and patterns and thus acquire wisdom is in danger of being lost. Serious reading is an aesthetic and fulfilling experience and must be retainded
