Abstract

Discusses the purposes of reference service as imagined by its proponents when it began over 100 years ago. Suggests that despite the introduction of a wide array of new concepts, services, and access methods, the role of the reference librarian has not essentially changed. Argues that the common principles and features of the service must be retained when rethinking or redesigning reference services
