Abstract

The problem of level of specifity in multifile searching possible from an OPAC is highlighted. Emphasis is on classification codes as access points in searches on mathematical topics. An exploratory study was conducted which serves as a framework for tracing indications of the problem from indexing through retrieval. The study postulates that users may identify LC numbers on desired mathematical topics through an OPAC search. They might then proceed to access appropriate Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) codes in the Mathematical Reviews (MR) and Current Mathematical Publication (CMP) subfiles of the Dialog MathSci database to identify additional material. Discussion follows on how the probelm of level of specifity in multifile OPAC searching might be alleviated
