Abstract: 3 fundamental requirements for the preservation of information are that the preserved information should continue to be accessible and retrievalble, understandable and authentic. Discusses 3 different ways in which the information in electronic maps can be archived: create and capture all possible views of a electronic map, and print them on paper or microfilm; preserve only the raw data in a form that is software independent as far as possible; and convert data and software functions into the successor technology whenever a system has become technologically obsolete. Considers how historicity and authenticity of geographic information systems (GIS) can be kept and discusses the role of archives and libraries in the field of GIS
