Abstract

Examines several crucial issues involved in the cataloguing of Chinese language remote access electronic periodicals based on the results of a cataloguing experiment at Pittsburgh University Library. Since Chinese language materials consist of the vernacular characters, the problems of reading Chinese text on the computer and dealing with the different Chinese character coding systems used by different electronic publiahers are fully elucidated. As one distinctive feature of chinese electronic periodical cataloguing, the dual effort involved in parallel access points in the records are explained. Discusses the challenges of performing name authority work and providing the information on URLs for the electronic periodicals records. Considers the value that this data might have for future work on cataloguing other non Western languages electronic periodicals
