Abstract

Discusses the findings of an impromptu experiment in subject access for images conducted during the 1997 Visual Resources Association meeting in Philadelphia, to demonstrate how many appropriate words could be used to describe a single image, in this instance the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. Argues that while all the basic data elements of artist, title, date, location, materials and dimensions describe the subject matter, they do not describe what is visible in the image itself nor the conceptual approaches an online user might follow to find this image. Asks whether there shoul be any limit on the number of terms linked to a single image and whether 'correct form' is an important as 'findability' in cyber searching
