Abstract

One way in which problems with the interpretation of place names may be ameliorated is for different user communities to agree upon common terminologies by which places will be named and for these terminologies to be expanded hierarchically in order to demonstrate the manner in which administrative, political and physical geographies lead to a nesting of places within the landscape. Describes an important initiative on an international scale to address these issues, the Getty Information Institute's Thesaurus of Geographic Names which has been made available on the WWW. Discusses locational hierarchy and provides an example of a search
