Abstract

Trinity College Library is the largest library in Ireland with a total book stock of over 3 million volumes plus extensive collections of manuscripts, maps and music, all recorded in a variety of catalogues. MARC was adopted in 1968 and since then approximately 1 million volumes have been catalogued, leaving 2 million items remaining in the older catalogues and uncatalogued. Outlines the efforts of the library to implement a full online catalogue for the entire collection. Describes the background to the retrospective conversion project (the Stella Project), and discusses issues concerning funding, staffing, selection of catalogues for the various stages of the conversion, and use of a commercial agency. To date, approximately 450,000 records have been added to the online catalogue and proposals are being developed for the final phase of retrospective conversion. The lessons learnt during the project may be of use to other libraries contemplating large-scale retrospective conversions of their catalogues
