Abstract

Indicates the well established communications network, and unified university library automation system and favourable government attitude which form the basis for the development of a national electronic library in Finland. Describes the budgetary allocations to implement practical measures to further this development, covering the upgrading of computing in universities, specific library projects and revision of the legal deposit act. Describes Helsinki University library's projects for: - the creation of an environment for on demand digitizing of printed texts and pictures; the building of a full text service of Finnish journal articles, and the archiving of electronic documents
