Abstract

Die Genforschung hat den Menschen seinen Mitgeshöpfen näher gerückt, als sich der scharfsinnige Evolutionsforscher Charles Darwin in seiner Verwandtschaftstheorie vermutlich je vorstellen konnte. Zu mehr als 98% stimmen Schimpanse und Mensch genetisch überein. Und doch scheinen nicht nur die äußeren Merkmale, sondern insbesondere die geistigen Fähigkeiten des Menschen so einmalig, dass auch die Naturwissenschaftler staunen. Sie haben heute zwar keine Zweifel, dass es einen bewußtseinsteuernden Homunkulus nicht geben kann und auch hochgeistige Phänomene wie Bewußtsein letztendlich auf evolutionär entwickelte physikalische Prozesse zurückzuführen ist. Aber das Problem, wie das Gehirn Geist erzeugt, woraus gewissermaßen das 'innere Auge' des Menschen besteht, erweist sich als ein vertracktes. In einer Festrede für die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, die wir in gekürzter Fassung abdrucken, schildert der am Max-Planck-Institut für Hirnforschung in Frankfurt tätige Neurologe wolf singer die Schwierigkeiten bei der Aufklärung dieser komplexen Prozesse; Schwierigkeiten, die dazu führen könnten, dass die Technologen mit dem Bau intelligenter Maschinen bald an Grenzen stossen
