Abstract

Mediale Kommunikation hat immer etwas mit einer technischen Verstärkung von Kommunikationsakten zu tun. Durch die moderne Informationstechnologie steigert sich die mediale Verstärkerwirkung in mehreren Dimensionen. Räumliche und zeitliche Beschränkungen hinsichtlich der Verbreitungsmöglichkeiten von Kommunikationsakten fallen kaum mehr ins Gewicht. Die potenzielle Informationsmenge explodiert. Die Informationen werden auf der Grundlage weltweiter, zeitlich fast trägheitsfreier und räumlich nahezu unbegrenzter elektronischer Datenübertragung ausgetauscht. Durch die an sich positiv zu bewertende 'offene Architektur' des Internet entsteht allerdings die Situation, dass alles, was überhaupt auf einem Computer erzeugt wird, auch prinzipiell veröffentlicht werden kann. Veröffentlichung bedarf immer eines Mediums der Übertragung. Manchmal ist die Rede vom Medium Sprache, womit ein Mittel der Verständigung gemeint ist. Dafür gibt es allerdings die weniger missverständliche Benennung "Zeichensystem", so dass man besser vom "Zeichensystem Sprache" spricht. Um Missverständnisse von Anfang an gering zu halten, soll der Begriff des Zeichensystems klar von dem engeren Medienbegriff unterschieden werden. Unter Medium wird in Anlehnung an Sottong/Müller (1999) grundsätzlich ein Mittel zur Übertragung von Kommunikaten (Äußerungen in schriftlicher, mündlicher, bildhafter oder sonstiger Form) verstanden.2 Kommunikate soll die Bezeichnung für Informationen sein, die auf bestimmten Daten basieren und die zum Zweck der Kommunikation übertragen werden. Übertragen werden Informationen auf der Grundlage von Daten. Auch wenn die Art der Übertragung die Rezeption sicherlich beeinflusst, macht es Sinn davon auszugehen, dass Kommunikate (z. B. die Mitteilung über einen Lottogewinn) unabhängig von ihrer konkreten Datenform existieren. Kommunikate sind äquivalent, wenn sie äquivalente Informationen übertragen. Äquivalente Kommunikate können beispielsweise per normaler Briefpost oder per E-Mail übertragen werden
