Abstract
Um den Siegeszug der Portalmetapher und der damit verbundenen Konzeptionen nachvollziehen zu können, wird zunächst der Begriff selbst beleuchtet und in seinem Bedeutungspotenzial dargestellt. Anschließend werden Entstehungskontext und Grundfunktionen der aktuellen Portalkonzeptionen untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung stehen mit dem World Wide Web, dem Unternehmensbereich und dem Wissenschaftssektor die wichtigsten Anwendungsfelder der diversen Portalkonzeptionen. Gemeinsame und typenspezifische Funktionsmerkmale werden erläutert. Damit soll ein Beitrag geleistet werden zur eindeutigen typologischen Unterscheidung dieser Konzeptionen, die gegenwärtig auch begrifflich nicht klar definiert sind: zahllose Kompositaverbindungen und Begriffsvarianten für weitgehend identische Konzeptionen sind ebenso konstatierbar wie gleichlautende Bezeichnungen für Konzeptionen, die nicht miteinander vereinbar sind oder sich auf unterschiedliche Anwendungsfelder beziehen. Die Entwicklungsperspektiven von Internet Portalen, Unternehmensportalen und Wissenschaftsportalen werden resümierend aufgezeigt
