Abstract
Das Memorandum der DFG zur Weiterentwicklung der überregionalen Literaturversorgung griff 1998 die tiefgreifenden Veränderungen in der Wissenschaftslandschaft auf. Die DFG reagierte mit ihren Empfehlungen auf die grundlegend veränderten Informationsbedürfnisse der Wissenschaftler durch die wachsende Bedeutung elektronischer Medien und die gleichzeitig veränderten Publikationsgewohnheiten, insbesondere durch die wachsende Publikationsgeschwindigkeit. Die Sondersammelgebietsbibliotheken wurden aufgefordert, zusätzlich zu der Erschließung und Archivierung konventioneller Medien stärker elektronische Medien einzubeziehen. Als Modellprojekt wurde das Projekt SSG-Fachinformation an der SUB Göttingen angeführt, das zum Ausgangspunkt für ein kooperatives Fachinformationssystem für die Informationsversorgung der Wissenschaft werden sollte. Inzwischen sind 14 Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken entstanden, die sich als Die Virtuelle Fachbibliothek mit einem gemeinsamen Portal präsentieren. Das Ziel der virtuellen Fachbibliotheken ist es, ein integriertes Fachinformationssystem anzubieten, das ohne Medienbruch die Erschließung, den Nachweis und die Lieferung konventioneller sowie elektronischer Dokumente zusammenfasst
