Abstract
Gutenbergs Erfindung hat der Menschheit die erste Informationsflut beschert. Sie war, gemessen an heutigen Maßstäben, bescheiden. Mit der Entwicklung immer leistungsfähigerer Maschinen zu Vervielfältigung, Transport und Bereitstellung von Daten (und insbesondere Texten) ist auch der Ruf nach hochqualifizierten Instanzen immer lauter geworden, die dem ratlos Suchenden Wegweiser sein sollen. Was liegt näher, als der Versuch, dem Nutzer technische Lösungen zur Problembewältigung bereitzustellen. Es werden also Computer eingesetzt, um bei der Informationssuche die Folgen des Einsatzes ihrer "Artgenossen" wieder erträglich zu machen. Bei genauem Studium des Problems und seiner Dynamik sollte auch angesichts des Erfolges beim Einsatz von Suchprogrammen die Frage nicht ganz verdrängt werden, welche Perspektiven mit den technischen Möglichkeiten verbunden sind, bzw. ob sie alleine ausreichen werden, um auf Dauer befriedigende Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Die Antwort muss, wie darzulegen sein wird, differenziert ausfallen, denn bei aller Leistungsfähigkeit der Technik zeigen sich - mindestens auf absehbare Zeit - auch ihre Grenzen. Der folgende Beitrag enthält daher zwei Hauptabschnitte: Zunächst werden ausgewählte Strategien und neue Ansätze der automatischen Textanalyse erläutert. Im zweiten Teil wird versucht, einige kommunikationswissenschaftliche und demokratiepolitische Konsequenzen aus den empirischen Forschungsergebnissen zu skizzieren, um darzulegen, welche Dimensionen der Forschung und des gesellschaftlichen Engagements dadurch herausgefordert sind
