Abstract

The structural paradigm for a database is based on the entity. Ontological and epistemological foundations, in turn, inform the concept of an entity. Such foundations stem from the traditions of Plato and Aristotle, which both inform and constrain the representation of knowledge in databases. The principles of the ontological and epistemological frameworks are explained and applied to issues that affect the construction of databases and the provision of information
