Abstract

Bibliographic classification techniques have a high visibility on the World Wide Web, due to the usefulness of the standard tools like DDC, and to the imaginative use of classification concepts to enhance document organization, visualization and retrieval. This paper argues that classification concepts are highly relevant not just to the organization among documents but to the internal structure and organization of electronic documents themselves. The rise of SGML and semantic markup languages has given hierarchical principles of knowledge organization a new relevance in a bibliographic universe which enables documents to be searched according to semantic tags. In addition, the development of new linking technologies resembles the rise of facet analysis in the early 20th century. As a result, we are witnessing a new version of an old dichotomy between enumerative and the analytico-synthetic views of knowledge organization
