Abstract

In linguistics there is a lot of controversy about the status of context and the dichotomy of context-independent and context-dependent meaning. In semantics there is a strong tendency towards the investigation of meaning in a truthconditional framework, whereas linguistic pragmatics as well as discourse analysis and conversation analysis focus on the investigation of meaning beyond what has been said (Wilson, 1990), i.e. implicit meaning, implicature and other kinds of contextualized meaning. But do these fields of linguistics employ similar principles and procedures? And is there a difference between meaning and information? The investigation of the interdependence of context and meaning has frequently been based on the Searlean principle of expressibility (Searle, 1969), the Gricean concept of conversational implicature, the concept of inference trigger and the respective inferencing proccesses involved in the retrieval of speaker-intended meaning (trice, 1974). Other relevant principles of conversation analysis and discourse analysis are represented by coherence (de Beaugrande & Dressler, 1981), adjacency (Sacks, 1984; Schegloff, 1984), preference (Pomerantz, 1984a/b) and sequentiality [Interaktionsfolgenrelevanz] (Franck, 1979). Meaning-in-context is also investigated by the sociological field of ethnomethodology which focuses on the interdependence of micro and macro settings. Their analysis is based on the principle of indexicality, which is also manifest in the concept s of contextualization cues (Gumperz, 1982), and common sense knowledge, practical actions and practical sociological reasoning (Garfinkel, 1994).
