Abstract
Isaac Swift ist Juniorprofessor an einer amerikanischen Universität und dazu ein Wissenschaftler, wie man ihn häufig finden kann. Ständig zweifelt er, ob seine Leidenschaft, die reine Mathematik, nicht doch nur brotlose Kunst ist, wie es die selbstherrlichen Mediziner auf ihren schicken Stehpartys immer behaupten. Im Dauerkonflikt mit der gefühlsgeschüttelten Weltsieht des anderen Geschlechts - so stellt es jedenfalls der Roman dar fristet er ein unspektakuläres Dasein. Von der Mathematik ist Isaac seit seiner Kindheit fasziniert - oder besser: besessen. Mal ist sie ihm köstliche Droge, mal Schmerzmittel, ein Fluchtweg aus dem Chaos der Gefühle. Eingespannt von der akademischen Lehre und den Notwendigkeiten des Junggesellenlebens, plätschert Isaacs Leben so vor sich hin. Doch dann ändert sich auf einmal alles. Isaac erlebt das "Wunder der mathematischen Offenbarung": Beinahe zufällig löst er eines der ganz großen Rätsel seiner Zunft, das Problem der so genannten "wilden Zahlen", an dem sich Generationen mathematischer Genies zuvor vergeblich versucht hatten. Der Held schwebt im siebten Himmel: Die Geschichtsbücher werden von ihm, Isaac Swift, berichten. Es könnte alles so schön sein wenn da nicht Leonard Vale wäre, ein geistig leicht angeschlagener ehemaliger Lehrer, der seit geraumer Zeit als Gasthörer das Institut tyrannisiert und felsenfest davon überzeugt ist, die Vorlage für Isaacs Geniestreich geliefert zu haben. Ein spannendes Ringen um die mathematische Wahrheit beginnt, erfrischend nüchtern und dabei stets amüsant geschrieben. Philibert Schogt kann man zu diesem großartigen Debüt nur gratulieren. Sein Roman gibt allen Theoretikern etwas zu schmunzeln über ihr Leben in unserer eben doch nur teilweise exakten Welt; für jeden wissenschaftlich interessierten Leser ist er einfach ein großer Spaß!
