Abstract
Die kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Bedeutung historischer Fotobestände in Museen und Archiven werden besonders durch Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaftler immer wieder betont. Auch in anderen Wissenschaftszweigen, wie der Volkskunde oder der Historischen Geographie gibt es zunehmend Bestrebungen, das historische Foto nicht nur in seinem Dokumentations- und Illustrationscharakter zu nutzen, sondern auch dessen Bildsprache, Motivwahl und ästhetischen Tendenzen wahrzunehmen, zu analysieren, auszuwerten und die Ergebnisse in ihre Forschung einzubeziehen. Mit der Digitalisierung von Fotografiebeständen, dem Einsatz von Bilddatenbanken und der Nutzung des Internets als Informationsplattform bieten sich vielfältige und neue Möglichkeiten der Sammlungspräsenz und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit von Bildsammlungen. Im Bildarchiv des Instituts für Länderkunde Leipzig läuft seit Mitte 2001 die Entwicklung digitaler Erschließungsstrategien für den Fotobestand. Die bisher exemplarisch erfassten Bilder in einer rechnergestützten Datenbank sind der Anfang einer zukünftigen Nutzung und Inwertsetzung der Sammlung, die gleichzeitig mit den digital erfassten Buchbeständen des Instituts für Länderkunde in dem Dokumentationssystem DOMESTIC im WWW recherchiert werden kann.
