Abstract

Die Selbstbeschreibungen moderner Gesellschaften sind unübersichtlich geworden. Stritt man früher darüber, ob "Spätkapitalismus" oder "Industriegesellschaft" die angemessenen Etiketten seien (Adorno 1969), so scheinen diese Stichworte zur Kennzeichnung der gesellschaftlichen Kernstrukturen nur noch begrenzt tauglich. Zwar sind die meisten entwickelten Gesellschaften des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts nach wie vor (und in mancher Hinsicht mehr als früher) durch industrielle Produktionsweisen und kapitalistische Wirtschaftsverfassungen gepägt. Gleichwohl werden wichtige Charakteristika mit diesen Stichworten nicht getroffen, weshalb andere Schlagwörter angeboten werden - zum Teil ergänzend, zum Teil konkurrierend. So wurde Anfang der achtziger Jahre aus der kapitalistischen Industriegesellschaft die (eher als krisenhaft begriffene) "Arbeitsgesellschaft" (Matthes 1983). Nach der Katastrophe von Tschernobyl erlebte das ganz anders ansetzende Stichwort der "Risikogesellschaft" (Beck 1986) eine schwindelnde Karriere. Danach und daneben war von "Erlebnisgesellschaften" (Schulze 1992) die Rede, von "Multioptions"(Gross 1994), "Netzwerk"- (Castells 1996) und "Verantwortungsgesellschaften" (Etzioni 1997) sowie nicht zuletzt von "Wissens"-, "Informations"- und "Wissenschaftsgesellschaften". (vgl. Stehr 1994, Hubig 2000, Bühl 1994, 1996, Kreibich 1986).
