Abstract

Prometheus, Herakles, Medusa die großen Namen der griechischen Mythologie sind noch immer vielen geläufig und haben über die Jahrtausende nichts von ihrer Strahlkraft eingebüßt. Woher stammt diese offenbar zeitlose Bedeutsamkeit der mythischen Stoffe? Welchen Veränderungen waren und sind sie unterworfen? Wie kann man erklären, dass sie laufend angepasst werden und im Kern doch gleich bleiben? Hans Blumenberg geht in seiner detaillierten Studie diesen Fragen nach und erläutert seine Antworten am Beispiel des wohl meistbearbeiteten Mythos: Prometheus. Der Autor setzt seine eindrücklich breit gefächerten Kenntnisse in Philosophiegeschichte, Literatur, Anthropologie und Psychoanalyse ein, um die Wirkungsmacht der Mythen in den unterschiedlichsten Lebensbereichen darzustellen. Ein ehrgeiziges Unterfangen, das vom Leser nicht nur umfangreiches Vorwissen verlangt, sondern auch die Bereitschaft, sich auf mitunter verschlungene Gedankengänge einzulassen. Wer hier mithalten kann und will, wird in Blumenberg einen kenntnisreichen Begleiter durch die europäische Geistesgeschichte finden.
