Abstract
An ihrem ersten Standort in Wien wurde die Wanderausstellung vom 3.-28. Februar 2005 in der FachbereichsbibIiothek des Zentrums für Translationswissenschaft gezeigt. Als nächstes wird sie in Graz ausgestellt (April/Mai 2005) und wandert dann weiter in andere österreichische Städte sowie in die Schweiz, nach Südtirol und nach Deutschland. Im Jahr 2005 wird die erste deutschsprachige Ausgabe der DDC, einer international sehr weit verbreiteten und schon seit 130 Jahren im Gebrauch stehenden bibliothekarischen Universalklassifikation fertiggestellt. Melvil Dewey hat das nach ihm benannte Wissensordnungssystem 1873 kreiert. Es wird laufend aktualisiert und alle sieben Jahre von OCLC neu herausgegeben. In Zeiten knappster Ressourcen und einer unüberschaubar gewordenen Informationsdichte sind hohe Fremddaten-Nutzungsraten und eine globale semantische Interoperabilität unabdingbare Ziele der Informationsaufbereitung. Nur durch den Einsatz professioneller und technologisch hoch entwickelter Tools wird es gelingen, stabile Ordnungssysteme zu gewährleisten. Ein Vorteil aller Klassifikationen ist ihre Sprachunabhängigkeit. Über Notationen sind sie in allen Anwenderländern miteinander kompatibel. In etwa 130 Ländern wird DDC als Instrument der inhaltlichen Erschließung in Bibliotheken verwendet. Häufig wird sie zur systematischen Freihandaufstellung eingesetzt. 60 Staaten gliedern ihre nationalen Bücherverzeichnisse danach. Seit kurzem gibt es "die Dewey" auch im Internet: frei verfügbar ist sie bis zur dritten Ebene, also in den obersten 1000 Klassen - dies auch schon in deutscher Sprache - sowie, in vollem Umfang, über Lizenz als "WebDewey" und demnächst als Recherchetool für die deutsche Fassung als "MelvilClass" und "MelvilSearch". Eine Vitrine der Wiener Ausstellung ist Eugen Wüster (siehe Abb. unten) gewidmet: ein wichtiger österreichischer Terminologe und ähnlicher Impulsgeber für Reformen wie Melvil Dewey. Er hat sich mit den Klassifikati onssystemen seiner Zeit intensiv befasst und hatte als Industrieller besonderes Interesse an der Warenklassifikation.
