Wissen ist frei, dachten sich die Gründer des Internet-Lexikons Wikipedia, bei dem jeder Autor und Redakteur sein kann. Doch die Info-Revolution droht im kreativen Chaos zu versinken.

"Wikipedianer sind ein virtuelles Völkchen, an dem Ethnologen der Wissensgesellschaft und Verhaltensforscher ihre helle Freude hätten. Die Ureinwohner stekkten im Web jungfräuliches Territorium ab und bauten darauf eine soziale Utopie, für die sie die Regeln schrieben. Die freie Enzyklopädie Wikipedia ist nach wie vor eines der aufregendsten Projekte im Netz: ein Nachschlagewerk, das als offene Gemeinschaftsarbeit von Tausenden geschrieben, von Hunderttausenden kritisiert und von Millionen benutzt wird. Wer heute einen Eintrag beispielsweise über Stammzellenforschung oder Arnold Schwarzenegger nachschlägt, kann den Text von seinem Computer aus ändern - und die ganze Welt kann die neue Fassung lesen, bis ein anderer Leser etwas daran zu kritteln hat. Transparenz soll dafür sorgen, dass Dummheit, Ideologie und Schlamperei keinen Platz haben. Man vertraut der Evolution. Aber geht das? Statistiken sagen: Ja. Wikipedia meldete im September 2004 mehr als eine Million verfügbarer Artikel und treibt seitdem den Verantwortlichen der renommierten deutschen Enzyklopädieverlage sowie den Herausgebern käuflicher Computerenzyklopädien wie Brockhaus und Encarta den Angstschweiß auf die Stirn. Doch die Erfolgsgeschichte bekommt bereits die ersten Risse. Wie viel Chaos ist erträglich? Wie viel Basisdemokratie macht aus einem schlauen Völkchen eine dumme Horde? Und wer, bitte schön, bezahlt das alles? Fundis und Realos treten gegeneinander an."
