Abstract

Seit Jahren wird das E-Book immer wieder totgesagt, doch ist es nie komplett in der Versenkung verschwunden. Erst kürzlich hat Sony sein neu entwickeltes Handheld E-Book-Lesegerät vorgestellt. Ob Sony es tatsächlich schaffen wird, das bisher eher lauwarme Interesse der Verbraucher an Lesegeräten für elektronische Bücher anzukurbeln, bleibt abzuwarten. Nach einer Welle der Euphorie Ende der 1990er Jahre - vor allem auf Seiten der Verleger - versickerte die Begeisterung an Lesegeräten schnell. Trotzdem ließen sich E-Books nie ganz vom Markt verdrängen und in den letzten Jahren haben sie langsam Fuß gefasst. In der Freizeitindustrie wird diese Entwicklung durch die wachsende Popularität des Palm-Handheld, mit dem E-Books gelesen werden können, vorangetrieben. Wichtiger für Bibliotheken ist allerdings die stetige Entwicklung des Marktes im wissenschaftlichen Bereich, wo aufgrund von innovativen Entwicklungen E-Books immer mehr Akzeptanz finden. Während die Industrie für Handholds versucht, das gedruckte Buch so gut es geht zu imitieren, machen sich Verlage und Aggregatoron auf dem akademischen Markt die innovativen Möglichkeiten zu Nutze, die elektronische Bücher bieten. Texte können annotiert und angestrichen werden, Bookmarks sowie Audio-, Video- und Multimediafunktionen sind heute Bestandteile von E-Books. Das Buch als eine Einheit verliert dabei an Bedeutung. Der Text wird stattdessen zum Ausgangspunkt der Recherche und ist eingebettet in eine Informationswelt bestehend aus Multimedia, interaktiven Elementen, dem Web, abonnementpflichtigen Datenbanken und Möglichkeiten, Rechercheergebnisse zu personalisieren und zu verwalten. Im Folgenden wird eine repräsentative Auswahl von E-Book-Paketen vorgestellt. Jedes dieser Pakete hat seine für ein spezifisches Publikum entwickelten Inhalte, Funktionalitäten und Lizenzmodelle.
