Abstract

Die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek hat eine Kooperation mit Google vereinbart. Der Internet-Gigant soll sämtliche Buchbestände digitalisieren, die nicht dem Urheberschutz unterliegen und in »Google Book Search« integrieren.

"Hunderttausende Texte werden online gestellt, heißt es in der Pressemitteilung, »von Klassikern wie den Gebrüdern Grimm und Goethe bis hin zu umfangreichen Spezialsammlungen und Raritäten«. Der Pakt ist in der Bibliotheksszene umstritten. Kritiker befürchten eine ungenügende Erschließung und warnen vor dem digitalen Angebotsmonopol. Der Generaldirektor der Staatsbibliothek, Rolf Griebel, prophezeit hingegen, die »wahre Bestimmung der Bibliotheken - nämlich die Entdeckung von Büchern und Wissen« werde vorangebracht. An Googles Bibliotheksprojekt nehmen bereits teil: die Universitätsbibliotheken von Michigan, Harvard, Oxford, Complutense Madrid, Stanford, Virginia, Wisconsin, Princeton und Kalifornien sowie die Bibliothek von Barcelona und die New York Public Library."
