Abstract
Patentbeobachtung wird immer aufwändiger. Die Menge der weltweit veröffentlichten Schutzrechtsdokumente steigt stark an und bei den Inhalten geht es immer tiefer ins Detail. Besonders prägnant zeigt sich das bei Schutzrechten für Entwicklungen, die auf Fortschritten in Naturwissenschaften wie Chemie, Physik, Bio- und Nanotechnologie aufbauen. Früher wurden Patente für klar definierte Erfindungen, Produkte oder neu entdeckte chemische Stoffe und Verbindungen vergeben. Heute sind es vor allem Gewinnungsverfahren und Herstellungsprozesse, für die Unternehmen bei den Patentbehörden der Welt Schutzrechte beantragen. Die angemeldeten Verfahren und Verfahrensschritte sind oft hoch kompliziert. Angemeldete und erteilte Patente im Bezug auf ihre Relevanz für die eigenen Unternehmensinteressen zu bewerten, erfordert von Patentinformationsvermittlern eine zeitaufwändige Prüfung der veröffentlichten Dokumente. Trotz der international harmonisierten Patentklassifikation ist in manchen Bereichen die Einzelsichtung aller zum Thema gehörenden Schutzrechtsschriften nicht mehr mit vertretbarem Aufwand machbar.
