Abstract
The article gives an overview of the development of indexing in Austrian academic libraries. Various reasons are considered why the use of the DDC for indexing purposes has met with resistance in Austrian academic libraries. The introduction of the DDC classification system in Austrian academic libraries is recommended by the author. The DDC provides numerous advantages for the libraries' acquisition and indexing processes. The implementation of the DDC is discussed as an organizational development project for academic libraries. First steps towards such a project are described.
