Abstract
Zu den populärsten Mythen um das Internet gehört der von »virtuellen Gemeinschaften« und ihrer segensreichen Auswirkung auf Demokratie und Öffentlichkeit. Die Begeisterung der entsprechenden Mythologen dieser neuen Technologien hat dabei oft eine rückwärtsgewandte Seite. Was Euphorie auslöst, ist nämlich nicht unbedingt das ganz andere, noch nie dagewesene, sondern daß nun das alte - endlich - in verbesserter Form so sein kann, wie es schon immer hätte sein sollen: von allen Mängeln rückständiger Realisierung befreit, ungehinderte Verkörperung der Idee, schließlich zu sich selbst gekommen. Die utopische Dimension neuer Technik liegt sozusagen nicht vor uns, sondern hinter uns, in den Träumen und Idealen der Vergangenheit, die jetzt erst ihren wahren Siegeszug antreten können, weil die Erbärmlichkeit ihrer materiellen Umsetzung überwunden ist. Was bislang die Idee beschmutzt hat, ist von nun an beseitigt, das Altbekannte darf endlich glänzen und leiht nebenbei seinen wärmenden Strahl der Technik, die bescheiden und selbstlos dahinter zurücktritt.
