Abstract
Die wichtigsten Rahmenbedingungen des im Jahr 2004 beschlossenen Formatumstiegs von MAB2 zu MARC 21 stehen seit Anfang des Jahres 2008 fest und das Projekt befindet sich damit am Übergang von der Vorbereitungs- zur Umsetzungsphase. Das war der Anlass den Wechsel von MAB2 zu MARC 21 in dieser Arbeit aus zwei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu betrachten: Erstens wird aus "klassischer" bibliothekarischer Sicht die Rolle des Austauschformats, des Interformats und des Katalogisierungsformats beschrieben und betrachtet, unter welchen Voraussetzungen Auswirkungen des Formatwechsels zu MARC 21 zu erwarten sind. Weiter werden Auswirkungen der Unterschiede verschiedener Interpretationen von MARC 21 untersucht. Ergänzend werden anhand einer Befragung praktische Erfahrungen des IDS mit dem sehr eng an MARC 21 angelehnten Format KIDS präsentiert. Zweitens wird aus einer fachübergreifenden Sicht vor dem Hintergrund der zunehmenden Vernetzung von Metadaten untersucht, wie gut MARC 21 im XML Containerformat mit verschiedenen anderen aktuellen XML-basierten Metadaten-Formaten und Protokollen ßusammenpasst". In der abschließenden Diskussion erfolgt eine zusammenfassende Betrachtung des Formatumstiegs in der auch auf die Erweiterungen von MARC 21, besonders auf die Möglichkeit ID-basierter Verknüpfungen, und längerfristige Entwicklungen bibliothekarischer Formate eingegangen wird.
