Abstract

Discusses the points at which standards have to be considered during the retrospective conversion (RECON) of a card catalogue into machine-readable form. Standards are needed in many different situations and after the decision to undertake a RECON project, it is necessary to establish both bibliographic and encoding standards taking into consideration the needs of present and future library users. RECON is a tool for the future and aims to provide open access to the bibliographic heritage. The more the access is internationally standardised, the better libraries can cooperate for the benefit of their users
