Abstract

Ein Gespenst geht um unter den intellektuellen Eliten der Welt: Informationsüberlastung. Das gemeine Volk hat sich strategische Ressourcen unter den Nagel gerissen und verstopft einst sorgfältig überwachte Medienkanäle. Vor dem Internet beruhte die Macht der Mandarinklasse auf der Idee, dass man "Geschwätz" von "Wissen" trennen könne. Mit dem Aufstieg von Internetsuchmaschinen ist es jedoch nicht mehr möglich, zwischen patrizischen Einsichten und plebejischem Tratsch zu unterscheiden. Die Trennung von high und low, dem Ernsten und dem Trivialen, und ihre Vermischung zu Zeiten des Karnevals stammen aus vergangenen Zeiten. Sie sollten uns nicht weiter beunruhigen. Heute gibt ein völlig neues Phänomen Anlass zur Sorge: Die Listen der Suchmaschinen gehorchen dem Gebot der Popularität, nicht der Wahrheit. Zu suchen bestimmt heute unser Leben. Mit dem dramatischen Anwachsen aufrufbarer Information sind wir von Werkzeugen der Informationsgewinnung abhängig geworden. Wir suchen nach Telefonnummern, Adressen, Öffnungszeiten, Namen von Personen, Flugdaten und Schnäppchen. Und wenn uns das rasend macht, deklarieren wir den stetig wachsenden Berg grauer Materie als "Datenmüll". Bald werden wir uns darin nur noch verlieren, wenn wir suchen. Die alten Hierarchien der Kommunikation sind nicht nur implodiert, die Kommunikation selbst hat eine Form angenommen, die einem Angriff auf das zerebrale System gleichkommt. Nicht nur ist das Rauschen des Populären zu unerträglicher Lautstärke angeschwollen, wir haben auch nicht mehr die Kraft, noch eine weitere Anfrage wichtiger Kollegen zu beantworten. Selbst freundliche Grüße von Freunden und Verwandten sind mit der lästigen Erwartung verbunden, beantwortet zu werden. Was die gebildeten Klassen aber am meisten beschäftigt, ist die Tatsache, dass das Geplapper die bis dahin geschützten Bereiche von Wissenschaft und Philosophie erreicht hat, während man sich eigentlich Sorgen darüber machen müsste, wer das zunehmend zentralisierte Computernetz kontrolliert.
