Abstract

In Zeiten technischer Innovation und beginnender Transformation sind oft noch nicht die Worte gefunden, mit denen das "Neue" beschrieben oder bezeichnet wird. Von daher bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als den neuen Wein in alten Schläuchen zu transportieren, auch wenn das "Alte" das "Neue" auf diese Weise gar nicht mehr fasst oder nicht mehr zu fassen vermag. Auf der sprachlichen Ebene haben wir damit die Ebene der Metapher bzw. Übertragung von Bedeutung erreicht. So gesehen leben wir nicht nur in einer Zeit der technischen Übertragung von Daten und Informationen, sondern eben auch in einer Zeit der Metapher, wofür das Wort "Bibliothek" ein sehr gutes Beispiel gibt. Denn was haben der Ordner "Bibliothek" auf unserem Desktop oder die Gen- oder Softwarebibliotheken mit der Einrichtung zu tun, die über Jahrhunderte als Schatzkammer des Wissens oder als Gedächtnis der Menschheit "Bibliothek" genannt wird? Allein die auf Dauer angelegte Verwahrung scheint die Bezeichnung "Bibliothek" noch zu rechtfertigen - vom "Büchergestell" findet sich keine Spur! Aber wie sollen wir dergleichen anders bezeichnen denn als "Bibliothek"? Noch fehlt uns das richtige Wort. Was an dieser Stelle auseinander driftet, findet sich in vergleichbarer Weise an Beispielen jüngster Bibliotheksarchitektur: Form und Funktion entfernen sich, lösen sich voneinander und - interessant - haben dabei den Namen "Bibliothek" teilweise auch schon aufgegeben. Das Informations-, Kommunikations- und Medienzentrum (IKMZ) der Technischen Universität Cottbus ist ein solches Beispiel. Das von den Architekten Herzog & de Meuron 2001 bis 2004 errichtete Gebäude, das mit seinem amöbenartigen Grundriss einen viel gerundeten, mehr noch geschwungenen Solitär in den Konturen einer Alvar-Aalto-Vase darstellt, beherbergt die Bibliothek der Cottbusser Universität, ohne dass das Gebäude die typischen Architekturmuster einer (traditionellen) Bibliothek aufweisen würde - das sind: Lesesaal und Magazin. Vielmehr treten Besucher und Nutzer der Bibliothek in ein schrill wirkendes Meer von Spektralfarben ein, aus dem heraus eine Guggenheim-Treppe zu Bücherregalen, Arbeits- und Leseplätzen und - nicht zuletzt - zu Event-und Kommunikationsflächen führt. Allein die mit Buchstaben aller Alphabete verpixelte Glasfassade mag auf die Funktion des Hauses als Bibliothek verweisen. Etwas überspitzt ließe sich sagen, dass auf dem, was auch immer IKMZ ist und bedeutet, das Label "Bibliothek" im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes steht, so dass der Besucher das "IKMZ" bewundert, doch erst mit den Buchstaben auf der Fassade das Haus als Bibliothek verstehen kann.
Einen fast konträren Weg geht das Jacob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum der Universitätsbibliothek der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, als dessen architektonisches Grundmuster und Leitmotiv das "Büchergestell" zu erkennen ist. Der Charakter dieses "Gestells" setzt sich nicht nur in den streng symmetrischen Rastern des Gebäudes um, sondern wirkt bis in die Anlage und Ausstattung des terrassierten Lesesaals fort. Auf den ersten Blick wird im Grimm-Zentrum der Beweis angetreten, dass "Bibliotheken" unabhängig von allem Medienwandel weiterhin "Bibliotheken" sind. Der zweite Blick in das architektonische Herz des Gebäudes zeigt, dass die Leseterrassen zwar von Buchbeständen umgeben, dort selbst keine Buchbestände zu finden sind, sondern Lesende, Forschende, Lernende gleichsam als Akteure auf die Regale des Wissens stellen. Mit einer solchen "Living Library" gehen Form und Funktion eine Symbiose ein, die vor dem Hintergrund ihrer traditionellen Verbindung auch zur Metapher wird, in dem wir - PC- und iPhonebewehrt - anstelle von Büchern in den "Büchergestellen" sitzen: IT-gestützte, vernetzte Wissensgesellschaft im Rahmen des bibliophilen Paradigmas - nicht zuletzt wird diese Metapher mit der Benennung des Zentrums nach den Universalgelehrten des buchintensiven 19. Jahrhunderts Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm deutlich verstärkt.
