Abstract

Reviews the hardware products and technologies enabling libraries to provide simultaneous multiuser and multilocation access to multiple databses on CD-ROM. Covers: LANs and WANs; CD-ROM servers; jukeboxes and multidrive units; high density PCs; LAN and WAN drives; gateways; and hybrid configurations. Considers the unresolved problems associated with dial-up access by remote users: limitations due to a numbers of workstations or processor boards; unexpected conflicts between remote searching software and CD-ROM search software; keyboard remapping problems; display lines on VDU monitors; output and printing conflicts
