Abstract

Developing the EU's cities into smart and sustainable environments - in social, economic and environmental terms - is one of the Union's biggest challenges. The European Commission is taking the initiative, in its communication on Smart Cities and Communities (SCC) - European Innovation Partnership, of launching a European innovation partnership to pool resources with a view to developing and disseminating, in urban areas, innovative technical solutions based on information and communications technologies. At the moment, there are already many definitions of "smart city". Some definitions emphasize the technological issues, the other - social. For example in a publication Smart Cities Study: International study on the situation of ICT, innovation and Knowledge in cities a Smart City has been defined as a "city that uses information and communications technology to make both its critical infrastructure, its components and utilities more interactive, efficient, making citizens more aware of them." In a broader sense, "a city can be considered as "smart" when its investment in human and social capital and in communications infrastructure actively promote sustainable economic development and a high quality of life". Referring to the definition Komninos (2008) in the paper discusses the significance of the Technology, Industrial and Science Parks (TISPs) - pr oducing, exploiting, transferring and applying knowledge - in the support of inteligent cities development. We compared different types of TISPs. Used both descriptive methods (case studies, comparative analysis), as well as statistical analysis..
