Abstract
Linux, ein relativ neues und kostenloses UNIX System für PCs, hat sich in den letzten Monaten zu einer Alternative zu kommerziellen Systemen entwickelt. Es macht aus einem gängigen PC mit 386/486er Prozessor eine UNIX Workstation, deren Performance durchaus mit klassischen RISC Workstations vergleichbar ist. Dieses Buch soll die vielen Möglichkeiten von Linux und damit auch der anderen Tools und Utilities des Internets, die von Linux verwendet werden, einem breiten Publikum vermitteln. Erklärt werden neben den wichtigsten Grundlagen und Konzepten von UNIX die Beschaffung, Installation und Konfiguration von Linux. Schwerpunkte bilden dabei die graphische Oberfläche, die Netzwerkfähigkeit und die erweiterten Tools. Außerdem wird die Entwicklungsumgebung mit ihren zahlreichen Programmiersprachen und Werkzeugen dargestellt. Den Abschluß bildet ein Überblick über einige der interessantesten Free-Software Applikationen, die für Linux verfügbar sind. Das Buch zeichnet sich durch einen praxisnahen Stil sowie viele Abbildungen und Beispiele aus, die dem Leser einen einfachen zugang zu dieser Thematik ermöglichen
