Abstract

Outlines how the Elmer E. Rasmusen Library, Alaska University at Fairbanks Library, operating in a predominantly rural setting, implemented a distance delivery system for information and documents by means and telecommunications technology and by replacing traditional library services with an information brokering and document delivery service. Users were primarily students located throughout the remote, rural area and technologies applied included electronic mail and FAX. Library staff were not enthusiastic about extending the new service without additional funding since the library already lacked funds and any additional service would divert funds from other uses. Some library staff shared the concern of the teaching faculty that a higher level of service would be offered to off campus students that was being given to the campus users
