Abstract
Werden Kryptowährungen eines Tages den Dollar oder den Euro ablösen? Wohl kaum - der Stromverbrauch würde exorbitante Größenordnungen annehmen. Am 1. Januar 2018 kostete ein Bitcoin 13 800 Dollar, nachdem der Kurs zwei Wochen zuvor fast bis auf 20 000 Dollar geklettert war. Mitte Februar ist er nach einem Abfall auf knapp 7000 Dollar wieder im Steigen begriffen, und niemand weis, wie der Kurs stehen wird, wenn Sie dieses Heft in den Handen halten. Handelt es sich um eine Spekulationsblase, die nach kurzer Zeit ganzlich in sich zusammenfallen wird, oder wird das Publikum den einzigartigen Eigenschaften der Kryptowahrungen - Anonymitat, Irreversibilitat, Verlasslichkeit, Unabhangigkeit von Zentralbanken, Zuganglichkeit fur jedermann und reibungsloser Zahlungsverkehr weltweit - so viel Wert beimessen, dass sie zum Standardzahlungsmittel avancieren? Das wird die Zukunft zeigen. Aber bereits jetzt gibt es Grund zur Beunruhigung. Das Netz, das den Zahlungsverkehr abwickelt und insbesondere alle Transaktionen praktisch unfalschbar beglaubigt, verzehrt eine gewaltige Menge an elektrischer Energie. Am 1. Januar 2018 schatzte die darauf spezialisierte Website .Digiconomist. den Jahresverbrauch auf 36 Terawattstunden (TWh, Milliarden Kilowattstunden): so viel, wie 3,4 Millionen amerikanische Haushalte verbrauchen, oder 0,16 Prozent der Weltproduktion.
