Abstract

Compares CD-ROM and online databases, the inherent differences in the technologies, the advantages and disadvantages of both, and the factors that might determine the best medium for a particular situation. Considers that location, quality of telecommunications, database product, the kind of information contained, type of user and pattern of use are all significant. Where databases on CD-ROM that are also available online are introduced in a library, any subsequent changes in online revenues are investigated. Discuasses the ways in which the 2 technologies can be designed to complement one another with specific reference to the DIALOG OnDisc Online links, image and full text databases on CD-ROM and search aids for the online database on CD-ROM
