Abstract
Bewusstsein erklären - was heißt das und wie geht das? Die zentrale Idee von Wolfgang Prinz, die in diesem Buch vorgestellt wird, versteht Bewusstsein als eine soziale Institution, die auf Selbstrepräsentation beruht. Bewusstsein erklären heißt deshalb, das mentale Selbst erklären. Die Diskussion richtet sich zum einen auf die Begründung und Ausarbeitung der Idee selbst, zum anderen auf die Charakterisierung der sozialen Interaktionsprozesse, die sie realisieren. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, wie das Zusammenspiel von kognitiven Mechanismen und sozialen Praktiken Selbstrepräsentation und also Bewusstsein hervorbringen kann.

Die tief gehende Auseinandersetzung dient auch dazu, den Geist in Anlehnung an Brentano auf die »implizite Anwesenheit eines Ichs« zurückzuführen. Wird das Ich hingegen als Produkt des Bewusstseins verstanden, müsste man die schwierigere Frage beantworten, woher dieses stammt. Aber wie kommt in einem sonst subjektlosen Universum Subjektivität in die Welt, und wozu ist sie gut? ..."
