Abstract

Die Fähigkeiten des Bewusstseins liefern den Schlüssel für die umwälzenden Entwicklungen, die der Mensch auf der Leiter der Evolution zurückgelegt hat. Wie ist es zu erklären, dass unser Gehirn dem anderer Primaten so stark ähnelt und ihm doch so dramatisch überlegen ist? Warum stattet unser Hirn das Zentrum unseres Ichs mit so viel Autonomie und autobiographischem Vermögen aus? Donald zeigt die Vielschichtigkeit des Bewusstseins auf und erläutert, wie es sich auf der Grundlage der Kultur entwickeln konnte. Für den Autor ist der menschliche Geist ein hybrides Produkt, in dem Materie, nämlich unser Gehirn, mit einem unsichtbaren symbolischen Gewebe, nämlich der Kultur, verwoben ist, woraus ein weit verzweigtes kognitives Netzwerk entsteht. Allein dieser hybride Charakter unseres Geistes ermöglichte es der menschlichen Spezies, die Grenzen zu überschreiten, denen die übrigen Säugetiere unterworfen sind.
Donald, Professor für Psychologie und für Kognitionswissenschaften, referiert die Erkenntnisse, die die Wissenschaft bisher über das menschliche Bewusstsein herausgefunden hat, und kommt zu dem Schluss: Nur das Bewusstsein hat den Menschen zur Kultur im Sinne gemeinsamer Gepflogenheiten, Regeln und Sprachsysteme geführt, diese wiederum hat die Bewusstseinsentwicklung des Menschen enorm beschleunigt und ihm einen evolutionären Vorsprung gesichert. Ein inhaltsreicher, gut belegter und diskussionswürdiger Beitrag, der sich in 1. Linie an Fachleute richtet. Mit Vorkenntnissen aber auch von Interessierten lesbar, ergänzend zu Titeln wie "Wer erklärt den Menschen?" (ID 4/07)
