Abstract

Reviews the advantages of CD-ROM as a publishing medium and notes the further advantages that would be derived from CD-Recordable (CD-R). CD-R users can avoid mastering costs and the turnaround time involved in normal CD-ROM production. Once appropriate equipment has been installed, a CD-R disc can be produced locally (and without the potential loss of security for sensitive data which is sent outside the organization). Describes the CD-R technology: disc capacity; data transfer rate; mastering; multiple write sessions; and staffing and application costs. A table presents the individual steps and staffing requirements for initial application development and for updates to applications
