Abstract

For decades, catalog departments in large research libraries have been struggling to keep up with an ever-growing influc of materials to be processed. This apparently losing battle, dubbed by Andrew Osborn in 1941 the 'crisis in cataloging', has engendered a wide range of points of view during the past several years aimed at overcoming the impasse. In this notre, the author examines some of the more pertinent access issues at stake in the discussion and calls for a rethinking of current attitudes toward the quality versus quantity debate
