Discusses what the concept of archival description involves and explains how it is originated and how its evolution is directly linked to 2 elements: the relationship between archival material and its creator; and the type of user of archival material. Argues that description has never been an archival function but has been one of the means used to accomplish the 2 permanent archival functions; preservation and communication of archival documents
