Abstract

In a past issue of the DLA bulletin, M.H. Needleman gave an overview of the Z39.50 protocol and the MELVYL system's initial implementation of the protocol. The protocol is a national standard for computer-to-computer information retrieval and is based on a client/server model that enables patrons to use their own local interfaces to search remote databases. In this model, the client searches databases on the server, which transmits the search results to the client. This article provides a detailed update on the MELVYL system's implementation. We strongly encourage users to explore the system, but they should be aware that it is still in the experimental stage. Some commands are awkward and some diagnostic messages are not helpful to end users at present. We will improve these prior to releasing a production system
