Describes the background and theoretical considerations relating to the music thesaurus, a project that is currently underway in the USA with the support of the Music Subject group at the Library of Congress. Discusses 5 characteristics which together sum up what the music thesaurus is or aspires to be: standard vocabulary; hierarchical arrangement; faceted terms; rich lead-in vocabulary; and complete syndetic structure
