Abstract

With the advent of the online catalogue the concept of the main entry of the card catalogue has been overtaken by the concept of multiple access points. This has particular significance for subject searching. Explores the subject access points provided for book entries by the Library of Congress, often duplicated in individual library catalogues, and compares these with entries for book included on CD-ROM bibliographic databases accessed by the library user. Discusses subject access in the UK and the USA and the need for standardization of cataloguing protocols. Underlines the importance for cataloguers of analyzing the needs of users and using technology to simplify and widen subject access to the OPAC
