Abstract

"In großen wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken Nordamerikas ist es dem Benutzer möglich, sich daheim im Studierzimmer per Computer und Modem des Katalogs zu bedienen: Man kann nach Belieben in der Kartei blättern und bibliographische Angaben kopieren; man erfährt, ob ein Buch zum Bestand gehört, ob es ausgeliehen ist und wie lange man zu warten hat. Hierzulande tut man sich mit solchen Neuerungen schwer. So groß scheint die Bürde von Tradition und Bürokratie zu sein, so träge schleicht der technische Fortschritt voran, daß begründete Zweifel entstehen ob die Ausleihe und Lektüre von Büchern tatsächlich Zweck einer europäischen Gelehrtenbilbiothek sind. Und siehe da: Die Effizienz einer Bibliothek ist tatsächlich ein Problem. Vor allem für sie selbst."
