Abstract: Reviews the history of the Internet and its bodies and the protocols and the mainstream services of the service. Examines Internet's overall architecture and goals with special attention paid to the Internet Protocol (IP) and the main issues of how each node or host in the network is to be identified uniquely and unambiguously (host addressing), how the data is to be bundled for transmission and the size of the bundles (data encapsulation), and how the data is to be transported from the origin to its destination (routing, transport and control). Compares the IP protocol with the OSI model and describes: host and network addressing; Internet naming; Domain Name Service (DNS); Transport Control Protocol (TCP); User Datagram Protocol (UDP); Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP); and routing. Concludes with brief notes on mainstream Internet applications; Telnet; File transfer protocol (ftp) and anonymous ftp archives; Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and electronic mail; mailers; Internet electronic mail notation; NNTP and USENET news groups; and the client server architecture
